Removing drive shafts? Tranny?

707 Views 28 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  SickCelica696
I'm almost done dropping my tranny using the repair manual's directions, I can't seem to remove the drive shafts easily. Whats the best way to approach this? Do I really need any of the SST's?

Leave the strut bolts, undo the bolt for lower ball joint, remove outer tie rod end nut, tap the axle in a little while pulling the spindle up. It should fall out, use some pb blast or wd40 if you have some.
Axle Bolt Should Be Size 36mm Socket. As For The Tie Rod, Band On The Knockle Couple Of Times (around Where The Tie Rod Goes) Then It Will Come Loose.
Someone might of changed the axle or the nut once before. If 27 fit too small go 1 size up if it was too big go size smaller.
whatever method you use to get the tie rod off, just dont f'up the rubber boot, ITS REALLY EASY TO RIP IT!!.
I would change that tie rod if its busted. If you use the "hammer the knuckle" method usually the boot is saved from busting. You got to give it a couple nice shots with the hammer thought.
Oh yea $400 later and 10s of work I got the axle nuts off real quick.
All you needed was a $30 breaker bar with the socket you got. Just pull on the breaker bar while someone steps on the brake pedal. But I'm glad you got it off. Spray PB blast on anything that doesn't want to move. It's about $3.00 at any pepboys, autozone etc. It's a s*it load better the WD40. done go for cheapy axles cause they vibrate. Rebuilt ones are the best cause same warranty, I get it for $49.95 through my garage and it's individually hand built! Need help I'll try to help. if you were in Jersey I would have done it for you.
