I think it is caused by you pulling to the left too much while doing the 1-2 shift. I am not totally sure but I have this same problem and trying to pull the shifter straight back w/o pulling to the left solves it. Anyone else have some input?

I need to go out and drive my car around tomorrow to see if it throws a CEL so I will test out my theory about the grinding while I do that.
