TextI just have a couple of questions about the celica, racing, and whatnot.

First, is the rear visibility out of the back of the celica really that bad? I've heard some pretty awful things about it. Is it tolerable?

Second, what would you guys say are some basics for street racing. I've heard a lot about the thumbs up and the hazards flash and the like. What is some standard stuff?

Third, does the stock celica have much torque for a four cylinder?

Finally, lets say you had a budget of 1000 bucks and wanted to get as much performance from the celica as possible. Not counting the cost of installation, what would ya buy?

Sorry about the dumb questions, thanks in advance for answering.

if this will help u make up ur mind about getting a celi:

visibility is bad. BUT like all things u can get used to it. i tilt my chair and mirrors in a way that i could see everything. In the beginning u can't see, but after awhile u get the feeling and instinct.(??) u cant get rid of the spoiler cutting the rear view in half tho...

stock celica has around 125 torque... not that great, not that bad. the car is light, so it should speed up fast enough to pass traffic, but not to race

this is all i know or care to say. as for the 1000 dollars, u decide. if i told u what to get, that would destroy any fun in customizing a car... so u make that decision... have fun in whatever u want to do

I think most of your questions will be answered with a test drive.

To my knowledge a thumbs up means that you're giving props to another person's car. Like after a basketball game someone might say "good game." And the hazard lights indicates that the race is over.

Dont worry about asking the questions dude.. they're pretty good questions for someone new in here. To answer your first question... one of the cars I have at my house in a montero SR from 1997 ( I Love that car).. one of the problems in it though is that the spare is mounted right on the back door.. which means that your visibility is cut too.. to tell you the truth when I bought my celi (GTS so it came with spoiler) no one mentioned to me the problems with rear view and I never really noticed after that.. you just adjust to it just like any other car...

About the torque issue.. if you're racing on a straightaway against a 50 mustang then you should know the answer to your question.. but I've had mustangs kick my ass hard on empty roads but when they stop for lights i can go around the U turn thingie and get right back on the same road at like 100 mph so theres no way that they can really beat me cause I'll outsmart them every time.. and laterally our cars are much better handling...

I posted once in a thread the comparison between total G's felt in 0-60, lateral, and braking acceleration... it was a comparison between a firebird and a celica GTS and the celica kicked its ass when all three were added.. which meant that it can make your internal body organs shake much more than the firebird.. so straightline isnt everything.

If you had a budget of 1000 then my suggestion would be free up the breathing of the car better.. afterall it has a very fast heartbeat and breathing is everything (i'm in med school so you can understand the med talk)... get a cold air intake and an exhaust... you can find a million and one posts in here talking about the diff. kinds of each available so dont bother asking which one to get or you'll get flamed... thats something you should be able to use the search button for.

Dont worry about your questions being dumb. if you think you're gonna be asking a question that ppl have answered before use the search function... it'll save you time and aggrevation from people who's goal in life is to flame newbies asking dumb questions that have been answwered 700 times before.. (like me .. hehe)

anyway good luck with getting a celica.. its an incredible machine...

Let me see if I can help here. With the street racing etiquette any ways. I am always a good sport, regardless of the situation. If I get smoked, which happens frequently in the Celica
If I can ever manage to catch them, I give them the thumbs up for props on their ride, or I'll roll down the window and tell them "good run" smile, and go our separate ways. If I win, I'll do the same thing.

Here is something that irritates the heck out of me. Ricers do this. When I smoke you and you see my brake lights, the race is over, because you were behind me when I stopped racing because either A: You're not worth getting a speeding ticket or B: you are a total waste of my gas. Don't do a ricer flyby. That's when I skunk some honda or Neon or whatever and they catch up and pass me when I'm clearly on my brakes. Then they hit their hazards like they won a race or something. Grrrr... Just keep telling yourself that, retards.

I did that to a Neon R/T the other day. This kid is revving at me. I'm in my 78 Mercury Grand Marquis. The light goes green, and I hit the gas and pull away from him slowly but surely (I have a mild 460!). I hit the brakes after he's like 10 cars back and he goes flying around me while I'm still trying to bring my barge down to legal speeds and hits his hazards. Way to go champ!
Some people have a skewed sense of reality.

please tell me you don't do that!

Chris

My answer would be an Injen CAI from the site store (I have one-good stuff), an exhaust (TRD is my choice), and for esthetics, get some lowering springs (TRD's my choice again). That should cover $1000 without install with cash to spare to take your gf out on the town.

There are opinions far and wide about brand names in the 3 upgrade areas I mentioned. Shop around and hit the site to dig up info. Members here, as a group, have seen it all.
