So I know my car has been having a misfire, but I don’t understand why my spark plugs are getting drenched in oil and causing it to misfire. Any ideas how this could be happening or what could cause it to do this?

Wont have anything to do with reverse :) but if its covered in oil on the top side its a leaking valve cover grommet. On the bottom its either shitty rings or its just rich as hell most likely cause is a stuck or leaking injector...

Would perfer to see a picture of the plug vs what i would think is ur dads hand and craftsman ratchets.

Yeah. I still don’t know what the heck is causing it to shake when in reverse and then drive smoothly but the whole spark plug was doused in oil. Just that one though. The fourth cylinder spark plug wouldn’t come out for some reason. It was like stuck in there. But I hope my injector isn’t leaking. They’re brand new

The plug was stuck? Get somthing longer then that 3/8 ratchet on it, theres a point where it can break but i wouldnt imagin he was anywhere close to that with that small of a ratchet.

Worst case Heat the engine up then spray compressed air in the hole get the plug cold an then give er another go... but... if it was stuck and 4 was the one with oil then its a leaking valve cover grommet because that would mean the oil was on top.

Eazy fix

Yeah. Like the ratchet we used to get the other spark plugs out wasn’t getting it out at all. Not even loosening it at all. It was weird. And I’m pretty sure I do have a leaking valve cover gasket because I have an oil leak somewhere near my engine and my brand new alternator has oil all in it now :/ which sucks.. On the first spark plug though, there was oil all on it.

Longer ratchet = more force

that or put a metal pipe on the ratchet... do you have a picture of the plug?

Remove the valve cover and replace the outer gasket and the 4 tube seals located under the cover, then test further. I am sure its time and they all need it anyway. Not costly parts either.
I'd also put in a new pcv vent tube gasket at the same time while the cover is off, its only like another $5. or so.

What’s the pcv vent tube?? And how much in total do you think I’d be spending?

Heres the trick to be able to figure out answers to questions quickly:
For this example i'll use your initial question about oil on plug:
go to google, type in question you have, pretend to talk like a cave man for best results and then add "site:newcelica.org" to the end so you have something like this:
"spark plug oil site:newcelica.org"
This will return results from old posts here on the forums. You'll usually need to read through a few of the threads to find answers. Sometimes people will chime in with good info or leads to things you didn't even know you may need to do. I suggest reading through at least a few diff threads on a specific problem to see if it all lines up. Takes just a few minutes once you're used to doing this a couple times. The first result in this example gives great insight about things I wouldn't have been aware of when I was a new to this such as the valve cover gasket. Post #6 from Smaay shares some good info, but that was back in 2013, in 2021 the odds of your valve cover gasket being pliable are getting lower.

You can use that same method to find answers to what part numbers are for example google "Spark plug gasket part number site:newcelica.org" or "pcv valve replacement site:newcelica.org" and if you need number for that job it'd be "pcv valve gasket part number site:newcelica.org"

Im not telling you this because I think your questions are bad, im telling you this so you can find good info fast from all the old threads and make the hobby less frustrating as a person new to repairing/diagnosing the celica.

Theres another more reliable method of getting part numbers but this is already a wall of text, lemme know if interested.

I had this problem and thought it was my grommets or that valve cover gasket leaked, but my gaskets were new, soft and pliable. I found out I was having a leak from the tube that surrounds the spark plug. It was leaking at the base of the sparkplug tube. I had to purchase a special tool (Hard to find) to remove the tubes, it took a little elbow grease to get them out. After I got them out, I clean the old spark plug seal between the valve trains and the spark plug tubes, the material was hard and brittle. I resealed them with Permatex Ultra Black RTV, tapped them back in and have never had that problem again. No more fouled or misfired plugs. Just remember that those tubes are not threaded, so with that tube extractor tool, I was able to twisted them up and out. Eat your Wheaties before you attempt this. It runs like a Champion!!
