Now, allow me to put some context behind the creation of the thread. This literally happened no more than 5 minutes ago, and it really made me think (laugh, and laugh hard, at first, but that's besides the point):

Marc had posted some status update on Facebook, where the conversation eventually shifted to atrac/marc saying this:

To which I replied with "^You misspelled gay somehow."

Not even 1 minute goes by and I get this:

He promptly deletes my comment anyway.
I replied with "wut, that wasn't even gay bashing, JC." :)chuckles:)
He responds with "My gay friends would find it objectionable."

Now, to the point of the thread.

How do YOU personally feel about the word "gay" being used? Being more specific, how do YOU personally feel about the word "gay" being used when the term is used as slang for meaning lame/bad/boring/dumb?
Is it offensive to you when people do use it as such?
Do you have gay friends who find offense to it?

And, I guess this goes for the word "fag"/"faggot" as well.

"Gay" has taken a more generalized status in language nowadays. Even LGBT organizations have adopted it and made their own.

"Fag/Faggot" are terms that were used to discriminate and persecute homosexuals (burning homosexuals at the feet of witches with handfuls of sticks - aka faggots).

So there's a difference in how people will view these terms. I have a friend who is openly gay and will use the term regularly, even in jest when referring to something that is boring. This is because he accepts the term as lingo.
He will balk at anyone that calls him a fag or a faggot though.

Meh all in context.

Perhaps more appropriate if you said you misspelled "dainty". And certain gays would take offense to that being associated with gaydom.

saw that , and my immature side of me giggled like a bitch.

You can call someone a fagot and they will think of the term faggot and get offended when in reality you called them the mouthpiece of a bassoon. Solely you will find that humorous .

To be honest I see where Marc is coming from, and if need be, agree with his request to have it removed.
That being said, if you were to post something similar on my page, I doubt my gay friends would take offense to it.
A couple of my friends have felt the need to apologize when saying "this is gay" or "don't be a faggot" when they're around my best friend.
But he has no issues with the term being used in such a way, and often uses it in the same context.
I guess it's a matter of opinion really.

I'm fine with either term, really.
Using gay to describe something boring has just become second nature to me. I may be alone in thinking this, but if a gay person takes offense to the slang term, then doesn't that show maybe they aren't all that comfortable in their own skin with their sexuality then?
idk.

As for fag, I don't mind saying/hearing it. Faggot has an entirely different connotation to it than fag though, to me anyway.
Fag to me almost has the same meaning at times as gay does. It implies something dumb or boring.
I do try to restrain from using it too frequently, especially around random groups of people I don't know/am not comfortable with.
Faggot I hardly say irl, and only use online at times to describe extreme stupidity.
:chuckles:

See, I don't have a problem with him, or him having asked me to remove it. I would have removed it if he hadn't already done so.
I just found it odd that people still take offense to the word. Especially when used (in my opinion) in such a light manner.

There's plenty of people who take offense to it.
Whether it be an over reaction or some form of insult or insecurity.

I think as long as we continue to tiptoe around words, we will still be divided by stereotypes and sensitivity. Not that being sensitive is a bad thing but let's find the right things to be sensitive about.

That said, I'm a giant hypocrite. The N word really bothers me a lot, for example. But I've been conditioned that way by society.

I understand why Marc did that though. He's an LGBT community lawyer, for one. He uses his page to promote acceptance and some may view him badly if they saw that.

But still:

You forgot about that? That was the first thing that came to mind when he asked you to remove it.

Gay.

I didn't even read your post.
Also, you only mentioned he was a lawyer whereas Jenn mentioned he was a lawyer to the LBGT community.
Reading comprehension/overall clarity in posts > you.

He posted several times that his law firm believes in gay rights and will fight for their right to marry and whatnot. I'm pretty sure you called him a queer after quoting him. :chuckles:

I don't think it is a big deal, and just like I do myself with being Hispanic, if I were gay I wouldn't give two shits because I know who I am. So, I don't think Boothten, that you were in the wrong in anyway and I am sure you do not believe your were either way.

Now, sure he has a business agenda behind it in general, but wouldn't promoting racism also hurt his image?

In the end, I simply delete anyone the minute they have any 'restrictions' on how I can comment on their page because FB is a stupid internet site and it isn't serious. I am way too vulgar and deliberate to even want to TRY to tiptoe.

The only person I have ever NOT deleted the minute they got weird was 'AJ' after "asl". Cut him slack but if he became uptight a 2nd time he'd be 'unfriended' :chuckles:
