Hi everyone,.. well let me first say that im very new to this site, and even newer to toyota celica's. That being said let me get to business, first off my fiance has an automatic ( yeah i know i hate automatics too, they just dont seem sporty to me.)2002 celica GT, not that strong but fairly fun to drive. I would like to install a turbo into it but not sure if its possible or what actions to first take in taking that route, or if it would not be wiser to just trade it in for a GT-S? (not sure she would go for that by the way) so if i could get some advice or pointed in the right direction to get started i would greatly appreciate it! thanks.
love the site by the way.

ok well it is her car technically but i normally drive it and im the one that does regular maintenance on all our cars. The only thing i dont like is that it is an automatic. well thanks for the advise everyone, this requires more debating not sure if i will still mod this ,..or just look for another to trade in for. thanks again.

actually gt's responds to turbos better than the GT-S
Wrong.

If you really want a fast M/T car, just trade it in and find one; it'll be way easier. Turbocharging an engine that was not meant to be turbocharged (or modified for that matter, since it's the 1ZZ-FE) will just turn your car into one gigantic money pit.

going from a auto GT to a Manual GTS will make you 2 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile which is a lot. buy a GTS then if its not fast enough for you turbo it. a turbo or supercharged auto GT will be as fast if not slower than a GTS.

Both the 1ZZ-FE and the 2ZZ-GE respond well to F/I. A basic turbo kit and a decent tune will make about the same amount of safe power on a stock 1ZZ vs. a stock 2ZZ. With the use of a higher-end turbo system and a programmable ECU, the GT-S will make more power.

Are you saying it's worthless to modify the 1ZZ entirely, N/A and F/I?

I dont' think they make S/C kits for the GT anyways and if you custom made one it might be pretty expensive... but as far as S/Ced auto GTSs didn't someone on here do that and it wound up being just barely faster then a manual stock GTS? a little more HP and a better torque curve but the auto ratios still killed it. As far as Turbos go a turbo auto GT would definitely be much faster then a stock GTS 6spd or auto, how much faster depends on how much you are willing to spend, and how high you are willing to go with the psi and how good your tuning is. however mod for mod you'd always win out with a GTS and as far as auto and standard that's also obvious.

Not completely worthless, but then again, not the greatest platform to start off either.

Yes, that would be jlitman. While "being just barely faster then a manual stock GTS" doesn't sound like much, it's a HUGE improvement over stock; he pretty much got a whole new car. Going from 17's to 14's is quite an undertaking. And even though the auto tranny still kills it, I'm willing to bet my money that it's much faster overall than a stock 6-speed, whether it's on the track or in rush-hour traffic. Best part is the CONSISTENCY. No misshifts, rev-matching, or launching to deal with. Just floor it and smile.

an AUTO turbo GT will still be slow and I doubt it will make a whole lot of power on the transmission and gearing.
an auto GT dynos at about 100whp , how is it going to be faster than the ~160whp stock GTS which has a 6 speed tranny? it would take a lot to take that GT to go fast. with a turbo kit you might be looking at around 150-170whp on an auto, thats with a very good tune. a rediculous waste of money and would still get beat by any I/H/E GTS out there.
