So I was putting my center console (the armrest area with the little compartment and cup holders) back into my car and when I picked it up this metal piece fell out. I'm not sure what it is or what it's function is so I thought I'd best play it safe and find out what it is and if it's important.

It measures approximately 6.5" long (~16.5 cm) and 0.5" wide (~1.5 cm) .

There's also an L etched into one of the sides, for "left" I am guessing?

Take off the shifter surround portion and take out the two screws holding on the window control switch. You will see two posts next to the screw holes. Align the bracket (after you straighten it out) with the posts with the "L" bring closest to the driver side, place the window switch over the bracket, replace the screws, and pop the shifter surround plastic back in place. Done :)

Also, I didn't check and I don't remember 100%, but I think the notch at the tip of the curved area of the bracket slips into a slot somewhere inside the center console wall. I'm sure it's to stabilize the center console and give it some rigidity.
