i own a 2000 gt and have a bearing problem and its burning 1.5 qrts of oil in a week. And the mechanic said i need to get rid of it or buy a new engine.

so i'm planning trading it in for another celica GT

my question is, what do i look for in buying a celica so i wont make the same mistake again. Its a 2003 GT manual.

help out a fellow celica gal please

thanks boys and girlfriends <3

want to try to stay with the celica

2000-2002 Celica GT engines had "oil consumption/oil burning" problems. some do and some don't. my 2000 Celica GT does not burn oil at all.

you will avoid this problem if you get a 2003-2005 Celica GT. You can also get a 2000-2005 Celica GTS. trading it in for a 2003 GT manual sounds fine. what is the mileage. make sure you don't pay too much for the car.

Your other solution is buying a used engine from a 2003-05 celica, or 2003-2008 corolla/matrix. They are all 1zz engines except for the xrx models.
thank you
yeah i'm looking at the 2003 GT
as for my mileage, i have 97K on it and so does the celica i'm trying to trade it in for.

i thought about engine swap but i am defintely not inclined enough to do such operation on my celi

drive it hard make sure the tranny dont grind had that problem with my gts. listen for the hub bearings up front had that problem with mine. and check under the engine for cracks to the case

Yes there can be issues with the synchros so make sure there is no grinding.

Also make sure as stated it's 03+.

I would urge you to buy a GTS, they can be bought cheaply now.

i would like a GTS but putting premium is going to be rough on my wallet. i drive a lot.

but i would look into some GTS too if they are getting cheap as you say they are. Just that all the manual 7gen around my area are GT and is rare to find a GTS in general. :(

thanks guys, any other info will be great too! :wiggle:

sounds like you already know what to look for ;)
maybe look for one that hasn't been modded in any way shape or form. or perhaps one with a trd package already installed. and if you don't want the trd package at least you have something to sell off for another package. and still pay the same price for a visually bone stock celica.

^ i completely agree. look for a bone stock celi which was not touched by its previous owners. theres a smaller risk that youll be buying someone elses problems, kinda how your trading yours in and the dealer will probably try to sell that.

if you sit down and do the math, if you cant afford the difference in premium

Defiant Autospeed on Nasioc wrote this.
"The difference between 87 and 93 octane is roughly 30 cents.

The "average" fillup will be around 12.5 gallons.

This means
87 octane fillup= about $3.75 cheaper than 93

The "average" person fills up 4-5 times a month. Lets use 5 just to go with a bigger number.

This means the difference between using 87 octane and 93 octane will be about $18.75 a month.

There are 12 months in a year.

The difference, again, using averages, will be about $225 total.
And if you fill up less than 5 times a month, that number will drop below $200 a year.

On an engine that asks for premium fuel, sometimes you can get away with 87, but
You get slightly lower MPG, less power, and it really isnt good for the longevity of the motor. Usually a smoother idle will be noted on the 93 than on the 87 as well.

So you end up saving @$225, for a worse performing vehicle.

If $225 a year means you cant afford the gas, then you cant afford a new vehicle to begin with. $225 a year is less than cutting one meal at an average restraunt out each month. Its so small of a difference over that timeframe, that it goes beyond being frugal and goes right into the "poor decision making" range"

Hope it helps.

well, with a gt, you should be filling up less too. my gt gets over 32mpg easy, so there might be more savings than your leading on.
also factor in insurance premium differences, it can add up

bottom line, both cars are affordable, as with any used car find one with low mileage (if a gt get a 03+)

Celica Drift 27~
wow never really sit down n calculated....it's not that bad at all actually...i just got this celica the end of July so it's only been couple months and forgot that i only need to fill gas once a week...be4 i got this celica i drove Mercede Benz ML320 n i have to fill twice a week for full tank cuz it only last me about 4 days..when the gas price was around $4, my full tank was bout $80 some dollars close to $90....it's true that putting premium gas will make the car last longer n better...thank you so much for ur calculation! ^^

Akita~ yeah, right now i'm looking for 03 n up...but it's SO hard to find a manual in good condition around my area...it was harder to find b4 i got this celica...after i bought it then it started to have lil more choices..i should've waited, didn't know i would have this BAD luck with cars...i didn't even drive it after one month i bought it cuz i didn't really know how to drive stick...after driving it for bout half month then found out the car is f** up...i mean WAY BACK in high school, i had a brand new mazda 3i n something went wrong with the engine after a year n they couldn't fix it so had to sell bak to the dealer...let's hope my next celica won't do this to me again...
