Yes, the transmission needs to be seperated from the engine. It is about middle of the road as far as difficulty, but if done wrong can easily damage your transmission. The short list of what needs to be pulled:

Wheels, brakes, hubs, axle halfshafts, battery, ecu box, three motor mounts, transmission + lots of bolts and small misc parts.

You also need a way to support your motor (Engine Hoist) if you pull the trans leaving the motor in vehicle.

If this sounds like its too much work, or out of your realm of skills, take it to a shop and pay to have it installed.

I didn't have to remove the brakes or the hubs on my gts and was able to pull the halfshafts out of the way but yes the Trans must be removed.
You dont have to, but it makes it much easier to remove the axle halfshafts. More room to manuever.
