3000 RPM at 60 mph

I'm pretty sure that 3000 rpm in 6th gear at 60 mph is a bit high. the only modifications I have done are new wheels wrapped in 215/40/17. these new wheels are lighter than the stock wheels, so I think that i would get lower RPM on the highway, but apparently that isn't the case.

I cleaned my MAf, changed the oil, got an alignment, what else should I do? i don't think the problem is anything major.

EDIT: According to a tire size calculator, my new tire size+wheels are smaller than the old tire size+wheels, and thus I am actually doing 56 mph when my speedo reads 60. Does this affect the RPM gauge?

A given RPM at a given MPH is dependent on the gearing.

MPH is read from the transmission or something (not very sure) so it doesn't matter what you do to the wheels, the speedometer is always going to read the same.

The only way your RPM can be reading than what it's supposed to be all the time would be if the clutch is always slipping.

i have a gt-s and i pretty sure I'm at 3k at 60mph.. also to make sure you'r rpm are correct, see what rpm's you'r car is at when you hit lift, easier to check in third or fourth. if it doesn't seem like it's not hitting lift at the right rpm then you would need to adjust it. Dooley has a mod on how to adjust the speedo & tach....

In reality tire size does not affect the speedometer in the sense that the speedometer is just outputting what it gets fed in, it's just an output based on the rotation of the shaft. What tire size does is it affects actual speed. If you install a larger diameter tire your actual speed will be higher than what the speedometer is telling. If you install a smaller tire your actual speed is lower than what the speedometer shows.

You're auto.

While going for gas tonight I remembered and checked my speedo, I actually had to speed up to get the 60 :chuckles: as I usually drive at 50. The dial was pegged right between the 2700 and 2800 rpm stripes so it's spot on with the 2751 rpm calculated by the chart. Since my tires are slightly bigger I think my actual speed was more like 62.

hey GSBoek or....???? not to change the subject but I'm running 205/40/17 and wanted to have some more meat on my rims for ride/handling. i noticed that you'r running 215/45/17 and so my question to you is how is the ride/handling and do you have any pic's of the tires on you'r sweet ride.. thanks

The ride is not too bad, compared to yours it will be an improvement as there's a bit more sidewall to cussion things. You can reasonably expect the wider/taller tire to be a bit heavier than what you have right now. I have Kuhmo Ecsta 711 tires, grip is a bit lower than 712 and ASX but overall not too bad. These are dry weather only though, not a great choice for rain. My car had been in overhauling for the biggest part of the rain season though :D.

This is the only pic I have that shows a complete tire.

sweet, thanks for info.. yea I'm running those Kuhmo Ecsta 711 and dam they wear fast and are really loud....also you'r right they are not good in the rain at all. i just picked up a set of falken ze-512 and man what a difference they are awesome. i used to run the falken 512's on all my other car's, but they discounted them and they are hard to find..this next set of tires I'm going to go with 215/45/17.... nice wheel's..:burnout:

Mine reads about 66 at 3000 in 6th.
Use a GPS to see what your real speed is with varying tire/wheel combinations. From what I remember the GPS was within 1MPH at highway speeds (speedometer was higher) with 205-50-16 tires. I sure that would still change with different tire models in the same advertised size and even pressures with the same tires.

I can attach the spreadsheet now:D

Here ya go. Just remember that the MPH speeds are actual - based on tire size. Not what your speedometer reads. The gear ratios already in there are for a standard GT-S. So, all you have to do is change tire size.

If you have accurate tach readings or can read the live tach data, you can calibrate your speedo for your tires from this.
