How often do you change oil?

It is nice to see how oil change affect the performance.
1. How often do you change oil ( time interval and milage??
2. What type of oil ( synthetic or dino, viscocity, Brand)?
3. Type of oil filter?
4. Year, GTS or GT?
5. Drive condition (normal, severe, racing)?
6. Performance before and after oil change.

My Celica:
1. 4 months/4000 miles
2. Mobil 1 synthetic, 5W30
3. Purolator one plus. Larger size.
4. 2000 GTS
5. most short trips less than 10 miles
6. Before oil change: Slightly poor acceleration/shift.
After oil change: Feel a little better. (Not 100% sure)

Most Celican owners complaint that it is pain to remove the engine plastic cover, mess the rivets and go under the car to change the oil.
After doing some research on the web, my goal is to find a consensus to the best economical ( benefit / cost) and painless way to keep the engine on the top condition. Sharing experience on different types of oil change, oil types, tools, oil sample analysis at different milages, driving performance relate to different types of oil and changing interval will be very helpful to reach this goal.
I hope, with experience from everyone, we will find a few better ways to change the oil. Thanks in advance.

Change oil every 35,000 miles or one of service. Sooner if oil analysis calls for it, but this hasn't happened yet.

AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 100% synthetic

AMSOIL Super Duty Oil filter changed at 12,500 miles or 6 months of use.

I'm in the Normal to Severe catagory.

There is no noticable difference after a the extended oil drain period. There was a huge difference when I switched to AMSOIL for the first time. That performance increase has never gone away.

I don't have a Celica yet, however, I'm using Royal Purple in my RX-7.

Oil and filter changes every 1500 miles.
Royal Purple Racing 51
Mazda oil filter
1993 RX-7 R1 Twin Turbo with a sh!t load of mods.
Always driving hard; racing.

I was using Mobil Synthetic oil a long time ago, but I made a smarter move to switch to Royal Purple. Royal Purple is pretty expensive, $9 a quart and well worth it.

LOL insanedriver, you still saying you gonna get a celica? :)

i use Royal Purple Racing 21 in my gts, i love it. i get it from northern auto parts for a little over $7/quart.

change it every 3500-4000 miles

this last winter, i put almost a quart of Racing 9 in, very lightweight, supposedly highest horsepower generating motor oil available and noticed a difference immediately. switched back to full 21 when it got hot. the car didn't even burn a drop.

You know me. :D Instead of buying a Celica a little while ago, I ended up purchasing a brand new fully loaded Mini Cooper S, but I sold it. It was a fun car to drive, but the exterior wasn't for me. I just purchased a Montero, which was pretty expensive and I still have my mind set on the Celica. Hmm...maybe if I take a test drive I'll buy one.

Royal Purple isn't good for extended oil changes. It is a good oil, but the price is way to costly when your doing 3,000 to 5,000 oil changes.

As a Preferred Customer you can purchase AMSOIL 5W-30 for the same price you can pick up Mobil 1 at your local parts store. Plus as a Preferred Customer AMSOIL Super Duty Oil filters are a little cheaper than Mobil 1 filters and they actually filter better.

AMSOIL has been recommending 25,000 mile oil changes since 1972! In that time The FTC has never fined AMSOIL for false claims the way they have every oil additive or engine treatment on the market.

Mobil 1 awhile ago took Castrol to court because they are using a conventional oil and calling it a synthetic. Now oil companies take other oil companies to court all the time but no one ever takes AMSOIL to court. Even though AMSOIL has other oil manufacturer test results on every bottle of Series 2000 0W-30 they sell.

If the test results we're false I can say with certainty that AMSOIL would be sued, for false claims, and advertising and be shut down, yet that hasn't ever happened in 30 years.

Use whatever makes you feel best. Change it as often as you'd like even if you don't need to. It is after all your own hard earned money.

Instead of changing your oil so often why not do a oil analysis and actually see how the oil is holding up. Oil analysis only costs about $14 to $20 and then you'll know if the oil needs changing or is fine for continued use. Stop buying into all the advertising hype of the 3,000 oil change. It's just a ploy to get you to change your more often so the oil company's make more money. If this wasn't true then explain why the over in Europe their average oil drain is 12,000. They are trying to raise it to 18,000 and those vehicles are the same ones we drive over here.

Do your own testing and find out the truth.

celica001: The 10w-30 most likley will not thin out as quickly as there are fewer modifiers used in order to reach that viscocity compared to the 5w-30. Also if you are in a hot place this summer the 10w-30 would be a better choice as you won't need the cold start flow of the 5w and you can benift from the better longevity of the 10w oil.

sidchang: True, maybe we should start up a UOA chart like the Maxima guys have.

i read somewhere higher weight oil is better for rod bearings(sp?). I am thingk about upgradeing form 5w-30. But here is mine

1. 3k miles, about every 3 months
2. Mobile 1 5w30 synth
3. Stock toyota filter or K&N
4. 2002, GT
5. Normal/Severe
6. Always notice the car feels much peppier after the change(werd!)

Based on the response, most Celica owners still follow the 3K oil change regardless the aggravation of going under the car, taking off the panel, loosing the rivets even the plastic panel.
Based the oil analysis experience from site www.bobistheoilman.com Mobil 1 should last at least 6-7K. Changing oil filter at 3-4 K may help more. Changing oil filter may not as hard as drain out oil.
With the $ everyone spend, it may be beneficial to do oil analysis at 4-7 k and see how good is the oil. It costs about $50 for 6 analysis (the cheapest). There must be a better way to chage the oil.
