so i was getting a nail in tire fixed at discount tire and decided to ask about offsets for a 17x8 rim cause i maybe getting new ones soon.

question, who has definite knowledge on fitment of

1) 17x8 35mm offset
vs
2) 17x8 45mm offset

which would fit better and not rub?
the guy at discount tire told me there was no way i could fit a 35...
but using an offset calculator off google i get

1) 35mm: 10mm less (wheel well clearance) 16mm more outer rim extension

and

2) 45mm: 20mm less (wheel well clearance) 6mm more outer extension...

seems the 35 offset is a more neutral fit...

sorry long post. tia for clarification...

in your comparison, what is being compared? that is, less clearance than what? more extension than what? it looks like it's comparing to a 6 in wide, 25mm offset wheel or something.

the 45mm would undoubtedly cause problems with rubbing on the strut or the wheel well. I would think the 35mm would be ok.

sorry if its confusing, i'll use one of my cases to try to clarify what i mean

"1) 35mm: 10mm less (wheel well clearance) 16mm more outer rim extension"

the 10mm less is from the inside (unseen) edge of the rim to the inside wheel well, the 16mm is from the outer edge of the rim, extending out towards the fender edge...

so read as... will having 10mm more depth rub the wheel well?
and will having 16mm more width rub the fender?

oh, also forgot to mention, when i was using the offset calculator i was comparing it to my 18x7 38mm offset that works fine right now no rubbing...

i guess the comparison #'s aren't important... if someone has had 17x8 35 or 17x8 45 then i'd like to know if they have rubbing issues...

btw i'm on ~1" drop on TRD springs/struts cause i guess that would make a difference too...

thanks!

Tire size makes a difference, too.

For example, I'd expect a 225/45-17 is more likely to rub than 215/40-17 (both are common Celica sizes), because the 225 is both wider AND taller.

As for 17" wheels in general, I'd want a 7" or 7.5" wide wheel with a near stock offset (+35 to +40mm) and 205/45-17 or 215/40-17 tires.

thanks for the advice guys...

i was thinking of going nice and wide... 235/45/17... cutting it too close?

it'll be 0.2 inches larger in diameter than my 225/40/18's right now... i guess 225/45/17 is good too hehe...
