rear speaker removal on 2000 + gt's and gt-s

Well, i'm pretty sure that some of you out there have actually replaced the rear speakers on your 2000+ celica. I wanna do the same but these speakers are riveted onto the panel. How do I get them out? Further more, how do I get the rear quarter panels out considering that i have already taken out the rear seats?

Thank you much!!

See my reply in this thread.
I have pics here showing removal of the plastic panel and speaker.

If you already have the seat backs and bottom out you are more than 1/2 way there. You need to pop off the door sills. Remove the black metal bracket that the seat back connects to the side of the car with. Remove the black plastic 'screws' by giving them a half turn and then pop the whole piece out. There are 3 attachment points along the top of the panel, just under the window that will pop free when you start to pull out. The panel also wraps around a metal lip at the door opening, that can be pulled free of easily. (this is why you removed the door sill) The rivets on the speakers need to be drilled out if you plan to remove them. When you replace them just use bolts with lock washers.

Just ask if you have any specific questions about the pics (name and #)

Note that you don't have to remove the rear speaker bracket. I personally did not because it is a nice bracket and seals well. If you want to keep the stock bracket, just cut the stock speaker out. The cone peels right up and then you have to cut the driver out. As you can see in bme107's pics there are 6 "arms" that you have to cut.

Good luck,

what are the silver wrapping for?
What brand is the speaker?
I needed some speakers for the back but not sure about the fitting will work
The silver "wrapping" is sound damping material. It helps to reduce road noise and improve the sound of your system. It dampens the vibration of the metal panels and blocks some sound from passing in/out of the car.

If you're asking about the speakers in my pics they are the stock ones that come with the premium sound system. They are 6 1/2" speakers in the back. Because of the way toyota mounted them you will need to custom make some sort of bracket to hold them. Either from scratch or by modifying the existing basket to accept the new speaker.

actually dude you dont have to drill the rivets out. they are plastic on the back side, i just cut off the back with a pair of *****, and as for the front the metal on the rivets is soft, i just cut that off w ***** too and bye bye stock speakers. I did use the bracket again tho, put my new 6 1/2 in it and put it back inside the car using bolts/washers/wing nuts
so far no problems w anything

how are you supposed to get to the back of the rivets to cut them.. you can't just reach back there and even if you could you can't even see what your doing. Drilling them out doesn't take much. I've changed the whole stereo in my car.. new speakers, front and rear, subs, deck, amps.... wiring.

As for fitting the speakers just some nice 6 1/2" (its the same for the front, and those too are rivted in and have the same sort of mounting mechanism as the rear). Go to any stereo shop and ask them for some ABS plastic. You can trace the outline of your stock speaker and cut it out so that it will fit the same, and then cut a whole just big enough for your new speaker to fit in.. but don't make it too big cause you gotta mount that speaker to the plastic and then mount the plastic to the car.

For the rear my speaker mount is somewhat like the toyota one... when i went to the stereo shop i brought my stock speaker and they gave me two sheets of ABS plastic and two rings the size of the speaker so that it would hold the speaker out like the stock one does.. if that makes sense. It fit perfect.

Its really not hard to do all that stuff, you just need the right tools.

Um, no they don't. the fronts are screwed in, not molded into the mount. You can just unscrew teh fronts and remove them.

Why do you need this?

The fronts aren't just screwed in they are riveted in and i'm pretty sure i remember that hole being bigger then 6 1/2".

As for why you need the plastic... if the whole is bigger then a 6 1/2" you have to make something to mount the new speaker on to fit right... sure you could rip out your stock speaker from its mounting thing.. but if you look at how it fits in there putting an aftermarket speaker in wouldn't fit the same and it would probably stick out to far because the plastic on the panel has like a lip that comes out and it just fits the outside rim of the speaker on the stock one.. so if anything stickers out further it wouldn't fit properly. Its kind of hard to explain... but trust me.. we looked at ripping my stock speaker out of its mounting thing but it wasn't worth the trouble and tearing up the stock speaker. You can buy the ABS plastic for hella cheap and its sturdy... i even asked the stereo place what they would do and they said they would just use the ABS and make a new mount.

i swear to god i post up on here trying to help out and its like you all are to prove me wrong for nothing. My full speakers were taken out and new mounts were made, i find that way to be the best so you can keep your stock speakers all in tact. You can mount them however you want. But why don't you guys lay off me a little.

No, the front speakers are NOT revited in. However, I think we are talking about two different things. You're talking about the entire speaker and mount "unit". I'm talking about just the speakers. You can unscrew and remove the stock front speakers from the mount.

You are remembering incorrectly. My 6.5" Bostons fit in the stock holes perfectly.

I'm not trying to be a d*ck. I'm trying to keep the facts straight for the benefit of others reading this.

I can't speak for anyone else but I am not out to "prove" anyone wrong. I am here to present *facts*.

For example, it is a *fact* that the front speakers in the GT-S are NOT rivited to the mounts.

I'm sorry if your feelings get hurt when someone questions your statements but you did the same thing:

How are you getting in and out of the driver's side? Crawling over the center console, or pulling the cable by hand?
Pulling the cable. I did the same thing for a week or so while I was working on my system.

i don't have a problem with people questioning me.. its people constantly telling me that i'm wrong that my information is wrong. I'm going based on how my stereo was done. If you rivet out the WHOLE mold the hole is bigger then a 6.5" speaker.. maybe your Bostons had a larger lip that came out further for the screw holes. It depends on how you mount it. If you screw out the speaker like you said.. which i didn't do because i wanted to keep my stock speakers all together and just have seperate mounts which i think is better for the aftermarket speakers.... the speakers will fit like your saying.

My information isn't neccessarily wrong, its just another way of putting in a stereo system. My feelings aren't hurt.. its just more irretating having someone tell me i'm wrong on practically everything i post.

Ok, I understand now, we're talking about two totally different things. Yes, the holes in the doors are much bigger than a 6.5 inch speaker. The holes in the stock speaker mount are not (that plastic mount, not the door).

I appreciate all the help you guys can give....your opinions may vary but I assure you all that they are all valid.

Thank you
