Transmission's whining

Well, since I changd my trans. fluid to Redline MT90, my transmission's been making a whining sound when I start to move in 1st gear, and less noticeably so in 2nd and 3rd during low rpm shifts. Today I changed my trans oil back to standard lube shop stuff, and the whining is significantly quieter, but still present.

Any ideas?

Nono, I know what you guys are talking about, and this is definitely different.

It happens when I start moving in 1st, and low rpm shifts to 2nd and 3rd, for the first few hundred rpms. I can't even describe the sound. It's not a rough scraping, almost like a tone.
Does it sound like a low rattle with a scraping noise? Only happens when you're in 1st-3rd gear and cruising slowly around 1K-3.2K rpm? Does it go away if you depress the clutch in?

I get the same sound (or similar to what I posted) on my car. For mine, it's definitely not the rotor/pads it's literally coming from the tranny when the clutch is engaged at that rpm. I thought it might be the heat shield vibrating but that's been scratched off my list already. I'm going to work on the tranny over the winter and see if I can isolate it. Only other thing I noticed is 1st gear has a lot of problems going into gear at a full stop (but that may be another issue and not interrelated).

I have this. do you know what this is from? I notice it also gets louder sometimes if I am accelerating hard around a tight turn.

Toyota replaced my tranny for this problem, but it came back within a week or two. Could it be related to the axel or something else in that region? CV joint, etc?

Your's is more likely CV-joints /axle relateded.

^^I wish I knew. Honestly, this is the first time I've actually heard/seen this type of behaviour from a transmission.
Yours sounds like a CV joint issue if it's happening when you turn.
I'm going to rip the whole thing apart and see if anything is worn/damaged/not engaging right sometime soon. A thought was the clutch linkage or the pilot bearing. Any suggestions here would be great.

I get this sound all the time when decelerating. It is worst between 2-3K RPM. It only sounds *worse* on the rare occasion when I accelerate hard in a tight turn. Regular slow turns do not cause the sound. Can a CV joint make this grind/rattle sound? I have only heard of the clicking sound of a bad CV joint. Is it worth having Toyota look at under my extended waranty? I have to pay a deductible for that and will be pissed if they just keep telling me that the sound is normal :(

A CV joint normally does a thumping/clunking noise and definitely noticeable on a turn but may not always do it consistently depending on the turn radius and your speed. Grinding sounds like the right way to describe it; rattling no.
I have a good friend that is an intelligent Toyota Pro mechanic (everyone can gasp here :D) which is the ONLY reason I take my car there from time to time. You might want to let someone who knows cars and you trust (outside of Toyota) listen to what it does.

Hey all, thanks for responding

Anyway, I'm 95% sure my trans oil was full when I swapped in MT90, and I've since had a shop swap in some normal oil.

It's not a rattling sound at all, it sounds closer to smooth metal pieces scraping.

I'm 100% sure it's not my rotors/pads, as if I let off the gas in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd while in motion and the car jerks slightly, I hear it then too.

The shop said my trans had a leak. Could this be it?

A leak? Well if there is no/really low tranny fluid then metal on metal with no lube with the gears is definitely going to make a lot of noise and grind. That's really bad for your tranny btw. ;)

Thing is, when I took it to the shop to have the oil changed, they said that it was still full, but may have leaked a little bit.

It started making the noise almost RIGHT after I changed it too.

If you're certain that it's not anything else and that it only occurs after you switched to MT90, then it may be that you don't have enough friction in your synchros. If you can devote some time and energy, try mixing your Redline (50/50 75W90NS and 75W90 with maybe a little more of the 75W90). Just a suggestion, I don't really know what problem you have.

I hate my car cause of all the funny noises it makes!!! I wish I can go to Toyota and order a brand new 2000 GTS!!! is that possible?? It runs like a champ one day hitting lift like crazy and everything, the next day no lift (my intake bolt is broken) and after 6000 rpm it makes a sound like valve tap or as if the timing was f'ed up and loses power. urghhhhh!!!!!!!! :violin:
