I have a 5-speed GT but have no change racing a auto GTS. Can anyone tell me which one is faster?

Search is your friend...There is already a lot of information here about that...

but to sum it up...an auto GTS shifts when the transmission says to, not necessarily the driver, and since the peak torque is around ~6000 rpms and it isnt the easiest to keep the car up there, and to keep it in lift (where it essentially gets it extra 40 HP) with an automatic, its easier for the 5 speed GT to stick to its peak torque around 4200 rpms and peak HP around 6200 rpms.

That said, it still wouldn't be that much difference.

from a dig, you can launch your gt, while the auto gts will crawl through half of it's rev range before even getting out of it's own way. by the time the gts gets moving the gt would be way out in front by then. from roll at 20 or 60, it would be a lot closer because from those speeds, the gts is about to hit lift (approx. 20-40 is 1st gear lift and 60-80 is 2nd gear lift) so instead of getting smoked, it'll at least keep up.

It's something I've always wanted to try though, just to see how bad the auto would get pulled by the 5 speed gt. :gap:

Uh, I can shift my GTS more or less when I want to. rolling into a race I'm dead even with a 5sp 6th Gen GT (5S-FE), even when I upshift and fall out of lift I was holding, pulling in lift.

Problem with the auto is that it can't keep you up there on the upshifts. If the auto GT-S was a 5-speed with closer ratios it wouldn't be as slow as it is. Instead of being 2 seconds slower than the manual in the 1/4 it probably would have been 1.5 second slower. :D

yea, if the 2ZZ auto was mated to a 5spd unit instead of a 4, I'd be a bit happier.

however on the upside, having the longer gears does make playing around corners a little easier and its a little better suited to linear boost like a roots blower, you're into boost-able rpm's for longer....or something to make me feel better.:

Read what I wrote above...first reply

as for that 5s...those had something like 145ft/lbs. of torque and weighed about 2600lbs, so it should have pulled you...holding is a different matter when lift engages.

40 extra hp and terrible gearing vs lighter weight gt 5spd that makes peak torque at much lower rpm. Hmmm I wonder.....

Well anybody in my area wants to try against my auto by all means bring the pain!!
